1936 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
Today I was thumbing through my stash and looking around at numi values, which is something I know nothing about. I came across a 1936 Walking Liberty half dollar piece that was very shiny compared to my other half dollars and in pretty good conditions less a few very small scratches. I saw that the proof versions of this coin were worth a lot of money but I've got no idea if this thing is a proof or just polished up or what the deal is. It doesn't have a mint mark on it all.
Anyone got any ideas whether this might be something of value or just another silver half dollar? |
Re: 1936 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
I just got a 1936 S Walking half too.
I'm going to CRACK it out of the slab it's in (4th class one) and hope for the best at NGC. I also found a 1994 SAE PROOF in the plastic case that will join it like two sisters getting a new slab set of outfits. Check out http://www.pcgs.com/prices/default.aspx 1936 PR 1,350 1,575 ▼340 ▼435 ▼500 ▼625 6,250 15,000 80,000 for a ballpark on your 1936 (those were bad years under FDR the first really bad socialist). :36_3_13: |
Re: 1936 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
I'm just not sure if it's actually PROOF or someone polished it. It definitely looks much shinier and more vibrant than the other walking liberty half dollars I have but I really don't know much about numis to decide whether it's proof and got some value. I'm considering sending to NGC too, until I found out I can't send directly to them without paying a yearly membership fee. I'm going to wait for some more feedback here before I do anything with it.

if it's polished, you will be wasting your money if you have it graded.
posting a good picture or scan of it would help. |

Re: 1936 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
No pictures yet but I'll try to get some when my wife, aka the camera operator, gets home. I guess more than likely the thing has just been polished. Like I said, I'm a numi noob so I'd imagine someone just polished it to make it look good and I got overly excited. But in the off chance it's worth something I figure it's worth a shot to get some pictures and get an opinion.
Is there nothing I can look for to try to determine if it's been polished or is actually proof? |

Yeah, if its polished the fields will not be like a MIRROR as much. Two it will have tiny hairlines cracks under a 10 power loupe. I have a 40 -80 -120 bi-scope that I used to get this this graded as a DD... There is a POPULATION of 4 on this coin per ANACS - in the last 101 years. This is the highest one graded. 1909 D/D is a rather rare coin too bad somebody made it l@@K like my PROOFLIKE UHR and polished it... :4_1_72::4_1_72: I'm going to crack it out and send it to NGC to get the registry reduced points The mint only made 52,000 coins for 1909 D... NGC only certified 459 total in all grades... I bought this for a grand a few years back and noticed in the SLAB that it HAD and EXTRA "D" a "D/D" so I sent it in with my microscope picture of the doubled "D" - and GUESS what? |
